Cellular energy begins with iron. However, iron absorption varies greatly between individuals and depends on numerous internal and external factors. The key lies in iron metabolism, which ensures the proper transport, storage and utilisation of iron in the body – processes essential for oxygen transport and energy production.
How does lactoferrin work in the body?
Lactoferrin is an iron-binding whey protein that protects iron from unwanted reactions before it is further processed by the body. Also known as lactotransferrin, it occurs naturally in milk and body fluids such as saliva, tears, and especially breast milk. The highest concentrations are found in colostrum – the first milk produced after childbirth. In milk, this protein is part of the whey fraction, which makes up around 20% of total milk protein. Lactoferrin’s ability to bind iron makes it multifunctional in the body, particularly in supporting iron metabolism and the immune system. It is among the bioactive milk constituents with natural protective properties.
What is Bioferrin® 2000 and what makes it special?
Bioferrin® 2000 is a highly pure, bioactive lactoferrin obtained through a particularly gentle separation process from fresh sweet whey. This method enables a delicate isolation of the protein, ensuring high purity while preserving biological activity.
Why are the added nutrients important?
The B vitamin complex performs several important functions: riboflavin and niacin support energy-yielding metabolism and help reduce tiredness. Vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid contribute to the normal formation of red blood cells. The use of bioactive forms such as pyridoxal-5-phosphate, Quatrefolic® and methylcobalamin ensures the vitamins can be directly utilised by the body. Additionally, the formula contains iron – an essential trace element involved in numerous body functions, including the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin. Vitamin C increases iron absorption, while copper contributes to normal iron transport in the body.

For maximum absorption, iron should be taken on an empty stomach (about 30–60 minutes before breakfast). It is best to take it at least 30 minutes before or 90 minutes after a meal with 250 ml of still, lukewarm water or, alternatively, with the juice of half a freshly squeezed lemon.
However, if you have a very sensitive stomach, you can also take Vegan Iron or Liposomal Iron with meals to improve tolerability.
All three NatuGena supplements provide iron, but each has a different focus:
Iron Vegan provides 42 mg of iron per daily dose (3 capsules) from curry leaf extract and combines this with 150 mg of vitamin C from acerola. It is particularly suitable for those who prefer a completely plant-based formula and a higher iron content.
Liposomal Iron provides 21 mg of iron in the form of liposomally formulated iron bisglycinate, as well as 120 mg of vitamin C (1 capsule). This formula is particularly suitable for people who are looking for an easily tolerated and straightforward iron supplement.
Lactoferrin combines 40 mg of iron from iron bisglycinate and iron fumarate with 100 mg of lactoferrin (Bioferrin® 2000), as well as vitamin C, copper, and selected B vitamins (1 capsule). The natural Bioferrin molecule plays a key role in iron absorption: It is an iron-binding protein found in human and animal milk (Bioferrin is lactose-free and contains milk protein). In addition to providing iron, this formula supports various nutritional functions related to blood formation, energy metabolism, and iron transport.
Conventional iron supplements can upset the gastrointestinal tract in sensitive individuals and lead to nausea or constipation, for example.
Well-tolerated alternatives include:
- Vegan iron comes from plant-based sources (e.g., curry leaves) and dietary supplements that are suitable for iron supplementation in vegans.
- Liposomal iron contains iron bisglycinate combined with phospholipids and is vegan.
- Lactoferrin contains the natural bioferrin molecule, which plays a central role in iron absorption. It is an iron-binding protein found in human and animal milk. It plays a role in regulating iron absorption and the immune system. In addition to lactoferrin, the Lactoferrin product also contains animal- and plant-based iron, as well as micronutrients that are essential for blood formation and iron transport.
Combining it with vitamin C can further support iron absorption, which is why sources of vitamin C are already included in all our products.
No. Be sure to leave enough time between consuming coffee, tea, and dairy products, as the substances they contain (such as tannins or calcium) can significantly inhibit iron absorption.
Iron absorption is enhanced by vitamin C, fruit acids, foods containing lactic acid (such as sauerkraut), and foods rich in vitamin A.
Certain substances inhibit iron absorption, including coffee, red wine, green and black tea, oxalic acid, phytic acid, and calcium-rich foods.
Iron Vegan and Liposomal Iron are 100% vegan. Lactoferrin is vegetarian, as the Bioferrin® 2000 protein is derived from cow’s milk, but it is lactose-free.
Iron Vegan contains plant-based iron from curry leaves, acerola, and piperine. Liposomal Iron contains liposomal iron bisglycinate, vitamin C, and sunflower lecithin.
According to the manufacturer of the branded raw material “Bioferrin,” this lactoferrin product does not contain lactose. However, the lactoferrin in the product is derived from sweet whey and contains milk protein. Therefore, this product is not suitable for people with a milk protein allergy. In this case, alternatives include, for example, Vegan Liposomal Iron or Vegan Iron.
This is a common side effect of conventional supplements. Switch to liposomal iron, as the combination with lecithin allows the iron to be absorbed differently. With Lactoferrin, the iron is delivered directly into the body via its transport molecule (Bioferrin), which, based on experience, rarely causes constipation. Constipation is also rare with EisenVegan due to the very natural absorption from the curry leaf. However, individual tolerance can vary from person to person. If constipation does occur, we recommend drinking plenty of water and incorporating fiber into your diet to regulate bowel movements.
Yes, we have wowtamins Iron Gummies especially for little ones. They’re sugar-free, have a raspberry flavor, and provide 15 mg of iron per serving—without that typical iron taste.
Iron absorption in the intestine is primarily regulated by the body’s own hormone, hepcidin, which is produced in the liver. If iron levels in the body rise, the liver releases more hepcidin—which inhibits further iron absorption from the intestines. To account for this regulatory mechanism, it may be advisable to take iron every other day rather than daily. This allows the body to better balance its iron levels.
Of the three products, Iron Vegan contains the highest amount of iron—42 mg per daily dose—followed by Lactoferrin with 40 mg and Liposomal Iron with 21 mg.
However, what matters is not how much iron you consume, but how much of it actually reaches the hemoglobin.
A higher iron content does not automatically mean that more iron is absorbed by the individual or that iron levels change more quickly. This depends on the function of the intestines and liver, as well as the available iron-transport molecules and other individual factors. If you have been diagnosed with iron deficiency or have significantly low ferritin or hemoglobin levels, your iron intake and follow-up care should be determined by a doctor or therapist.
| Product | Iron per Daily Dose | Special Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Vegan | 42 mg | plant-based iron from curry leaves |
| Lactoferrin | 40 mg | iron + lactoferrin + B vitamins + copper |
| Liposomal Iron | 21 mg | liposomal iron bisglycinate |
Thus, Iron Vegan provides the highest amount of iron per daily dose at 42 mg, closely followed by Lactoferrin at 40 mg. Liposomal Iron contains 21 mg per daily dose.
With just one capsule per day, you can already cover your regular daily iron requirement. Higher doses may be necessary for targeted therapeutic use to correct a deficiency. Please have your ferritin level checked in a blood test.
Vitamin C increases iron absorption. That is why iron is combined with vitamin C in all three formulations.
Iron Vegan contains 150 mg of vitamin C from acerola, Liposomal Iron contains 120 mg of vitamin C, and Lactoferrin contains 240 mg of vitamin C per daily serving.

Dosage
In general, the recommended intake stated on the packaging applies to adults. Since children’s nutrient requirements vary depending on age, body weight, diet, and individual circumstances, the use and dosage of our products should be discussed with the treating pediatrician in advance. Please note that not all ingredients and products are suitable for children. Suitability should therefore always be professionally assessed on an individual basis.
Many capsules can generally be opened and their contents mixed into food or a drink, such as (coconut) yogurt, applesauce, or mashed potatoes. However, this should not be used as a basis for independently determining the dosage for children.
For drops as well, the amount and frequency of intake for children should be determined individually based on tolerance and need, in consultation with a healthcare professional.
Most of our capsules can be opened without any concerns. The contents can be stirred into yogurt, plant-based yogurt, applesauce, smoothies, or juice, for example.
One of the reasons we encapsulate the ingredients is to keep their sometimes intense natural taste and smell as neutral as possible. When opened, the taste and smell may therefore be more noticeable.
Did you know? Our capsules can be easily opened by gently twisting them.
Please do not open: enteric-coated capsules
For certain bacterial and enzyme products, we use enteric-coated capsules. These should not be opened, as doing so may alter the intended release profile.
These include, for example:
- Bacterial preparations, such as HistaBakt, MakroAktiv, and BactoGena 21+2
- Enzyme products, such as N-Zymarase® Intest and N-Zymarase® Inflam. Exception: N-Zymarase Komplex contains betaine HCl, which is intended to take effect in the stomach; therefore, it does not have an enteric-coated capsule shell and can be opened
- Soft capsules with liquid contents, such as omega-3 capsules, are also not intended to be opened. In this case, you can switch to the liquid oil instead.
If you have any questions, please contact our advisory team at info@natugena.de.
From the very beginning, NatuGena has used exceptionally pure, plant-based HPMC capsules in the majority of its products. HPMC stands for hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and is made from plant-based cellulose.
Unlike many HPMC capsules commonly available on the market, the coating agents we use contain no carrageenan or PEG. Although they are more expensive, they meet our high standards for a carefully selected and transparent product composition.
Our plant-based HPMC capsules are:
- 100% plant-based cellulose (HPMC)
- Carrageenan-free
- PEG-free
- Gelatin-free
- GMO-free
- Free of allergens and irritants
What types of capsule shells are used in omega-3 products?
Special softgels are required for liquid oils. Our classic omega-3 capsules therefore contain a coating made from gelatin and glycerin and are not vegan.
In our vegan omega-3 capsules made from algae oil, the coating consists of glycerin and modified cornstarch and contains no gelatin. This makes these capsules suitable for a vegan diet.
The exact composition of each coating agent is clearly listed in the ingredients list.
It All Comes Down to the Composition
Conventional capsule shells may contain technical additives—such as anti-caking agents, release agents, or binders—due to the manufacturing process. These components aren’t always immediately apparent, as certain processing aids aren’t required to be listed in the ingredients list.
Most of the NatuGena capsule products are size 00 (8,2 × 23,3 mm) to 0 (7,3 × 21,2 mm). Information on the capsule sizes of individual products can be found on the relevant product page or by contacting info@natugena.de

We work with the independent laboratory AgroLab, which we commission to perform microbiological and heavy metal tests.
In our microbiological testing, we measure the aerobic mesophilic plate count (total plate count), as well as the levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli), yeasts, Salmonella, molds, and staphylococci.
For heavy metals, we test for arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury in accordance with the limit values specified in Regulation (EU) 2023/915.
The optimal duration of use depends on the specific nutrient, your initial situation, diet, and individual requirements.
There is therefore no one-size-fits-all recommendation for how long a product should be taken. For products intended to support nutrient intake over a longer period, use over several weeks to months may be appropriate. In many cases, a period of around three months may be suitable before nutrient status and further requirements are reassessed.
In the case of diagnosed deficiencies, medical conditions, or the use of medication, the use of supplements should be individually discussed with a doctor or qualified healthcare professional.
The optimal time to take a supplement depends on the specific nutrient, individual tolerance, and the composition of the product. However, some ingredients can be particularly well suited to certain times of day or meals.
In the morning
Stimulating ingredients are often preferably taken in the morning or during the first half of the day. These include, for example:
- Coenzyme Q10
- Green tea extract
- Certain B vitamins
Especially for sensitive individuals, it may be advisable to avoid taking stimulating ingredients immediately before bedtime.
Throughout the day
For some nutrients, it may be beneficial to divide the daily amount into several doses.
Water-soluble vitamins such as B vitamins and vitamin C can be taken throughout the day.
Magnesium can also be divided into several doses rather than taking the entire daily amount at once. This may improve tolerance, particularly with higher amounts.
In the evening
Depending on the type of magnesium compound, taking it in the evening may be beneficial. Magnesium glycinate, for example, is often preferably taken in the evening.
In general, however, the best time to take a product also depends on when it is individually best tolerated and can be reliably incorporated into your daily routine.
With a meal
Some nutrients benefit from being taken together with a meal.
Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K can be taken together and ideally with a meal containing some fat.
Omega-3 fatty acids should also be taken regularly with a meal. Omega-3 oils can be combined well with fat-soluble vitamins.
Many plant-based ingredients can also be taken as part of a meal or together with omega-3 products. However, the optimal timing depends on the specific plant compound and product formulation.
Zinc can cause nausea or stomach discomfort on an empty stomach in some people. If you have a sensitive stomach, it is therefore advisable to take zinc with a meal.
Between meals
Iron is often taken separately from meals, as various foods and beverages can affect its absorption. It is particularly advisable to leave a gap between iron and:
- Coffee and tea
- Caffeinated beverages
- Milk and dairy products
- Calcium- or mineral-rich supplements
However, if you have a sensitive stomach, iron can also be taken with a meal. In this case, individual tolerance is more important than a theoretically optimal intake situation.
Enzyme supplements vary depending on their intended use: digestive enzymes are generally taken with meals. Products that are specifically intended to be taken between meals may, for example, be taken around 30 minutes before a meal. The product's specific recommended intake should always be followed.
Around exercise
Proteins and amino acids can be taken both before and after training.
If you exercise on an empty stomach, taking them around 30 minutes before training may be beneficial. If you have already eaten a protein-rich meal, you can also plan your protein intake for after training.
In general, ensuring sufficient protein intake throughout the entire day is more important than adhering to a narrow time window around your workout.
