Methionine is an essential sulphur-containing amino acid and an important source of organically bound sulphur, as methionine has an integrated sulphur atom in its chemical structure. The organism metabolises methionine into S-adenosyl-methionine, better known as SAMe. Thus, the amino acid also serves as a precursor of cysteine and provides the body with sulphur and methyl groups for the synthesis of numerous endogenous substances. Methionine has a wide range of effects. In sports, it supports the anabolic effect of training, can enhance the functionality of selenium and is a precursor of glutathione, taurine, cysteine as well as carnitine.
