Taurine is basically called an amino acid because it is an organically bound acid with an amino group. Chemically, however, taurine is an aminosulfonic acid. As a breakdown product of the amino acids cysteine and methionine, taurine has a variety of regulatory functions in the body. Taurine is the most abundant of the sulphur-containing amino acids at the cellular level. Taurine is present in particularly high concentrations in the heart and retina cells. With advancing age, the concentration of taurine in the body decreases. This primarily affects the regenerative potential of the heart, nerve, kidney and brain cells. Furthermore, taurine is an essential component of bile. It was first discovered in the bile of a bull in 1827 as a colourless, crystalline substance. Taurine is the Latin word for bull - Taurus.

The taurine content in the human body is between 30 and 70 g in relation to a body weight of approx. 70 kg.  In its natural form, taurine is mainly found in meat and fish and hardly ever in plant food. Due to its very complex synthesis of taurine and a possible lack of co-factors such as calcium, magnesium, sodium and many more, weisen Vegetarier und Veganer häufiger einen Mangel auf.
