Glutamic acid is a non-essential amino acid. Amino acids are organic compounds that serve as building blocks for proteins. There are 20 different amino acids, 11 of which are considered non-essential by the human body. Non-essential amino acids are generally produced by the body itself and do not necessarily have to be ingested through food. Glutamic acid is mainly found in protein-rich foods such as meat, fish and pulses.
 
In biological systems, glutamic acid has an essential function as a neurotransmitter in the brain. If there is a deficiency, general performance decreases. Exhaustion, a lack of drive and a decline in cognitive performance are the result.
