L-Carnitine is an endogenous compound that is primarily synthesised (produced) in the brain, liver and kidneys from the essential amino acids L-Lysine and L-Methionine. L-carnitine is stored in 98 % of heart and skeletal muscle. It plays an essential role in energy metabolism in the transport of fatty acids between the cytosol and cell organelles such as mitochondria.
 
CoQ10 is part of the electron transport chain in mitochondria. The mitochondria are the power plants of the cell where energy production takes place.
The newly discovered vitamin PQQ functions as a non-covalently bound coenzyme.
