L-cysteine is a sulphur-containing, non-essential amino acid. It can be produced from methionine. As sulphur-containing amino acids, L-cysteine and L-methionine are the starting substances for all the body's sulphur-containing compounds. Sulphur-containing amino acids are used to make tissues.

N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is the acetylated form (compound with acetic acid) of L-cysteine. Compared to L-cysteine, NAC is generally better tolerated and less prone to oxidation.

The compound as NAC also occurs naturally and can be found, for example, in chicken and turkey meat, garlic, eggs, but also in various fruits and vegetables. NAC 600 is synthetically derived and is 100% vegan.
