The essential trace element manganese must be taken in through food, as the body cannot synthesize it itself. On average, there is about 10-40 mg of manganese in the human organism. The highest amount of manganese is found in bone, liver and kidney cells as well as in mitochondria. As a cofactor of more than 60 enzymes, the trace element is an important component for the functional course of many metabolic processes. Manganese protects cells from oxidative stress through the manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase.
