Why is magnesium so important for the body?

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in numerous bodily functions. It helps reduce tiredness and fatigue and supports normal energy metabolism. Additionally, magnesium plays a vital role in maintaining normal muscle function and supporting the nervous system, as well as contributing to electrolyte balance.

How does Magnesia 7+1 support muscles, metabolism, and bones?

Magnesia 7+1 combines eight magnesium compounds that complement each other optimally. Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function and plays a role in normal protein metabolism. It also supports the maintenance of normal bones. The variety of magnesium sources ensures optimal supply.

Which magnesium compounds are included in Magnesia 7+1?

The selection of eight magnesium compounds in Magnesia 7+1 is designed to optimally utilise different absorption pathways and rates. Organic compounds such as magnesium citrate, bisglycinate, and malate are known for their high bioavailability and quick absorption. In contrast, inorganic forms like magnesium carbonate and phosphate ensure continuous release. This combination provides efficient magnesium supply throughout the day to meet the body’s individual needs.

What makes Magnesia 7+1 stand out?

Our new Magnesia 7+1 deliberately omits vitamin D, focusing on pure magnesium supplementation with premium raw materials made in Germany. For an optimal combination, we recommend our vitamin D products (e.g. LipoVitamine 1000 Vegan, LipoVitamine 5000). The vegan capsule shell made of HPMC ensures excellent tolerability.

Recommended intake

1 capsule 3 times daily. For optimal results, take at least 30 minutes before or 90 minutes after a meal with 250 ml of still, lukewarm water or, alternatively, with the juice of half a freshly squeezed lemon.

Notes

Dietary supplements should not be used as a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and a healthy lifestyle. Keep out of reach of small children. Store in a cool, dry place away from light. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake.

Which magnesium is right for me?

Magnesia7+1 contains 8 forms of magnesium and thus provides comprehensive care. For constipation, we recommend magnesium citrate or malate. However, those who tend to have loose stools or diarrhea should avoid these two and opt for magnesium glycinate or taurate instead. Time of day: We recommend magnesium citrate, malate, taurate, and threonate in the morning or during the day, and glycinate in the evening for relaxation. Large amounts of magnesium should always be taken in small doses throughout the day.

We offer a range of different magnesium salts. To understand the difference between them, we need to take a brief detour into chemistry. Elemental magnesium is always positively charged and must therefore find a negatively charged bonding partner in order to exist as a stable, balanced salt.

There are a wide variety of magnesium salts, but not all of them dissolve well in the body and are therefore able to release magnesium to our cells (bioavailability). We primarily offer highly bioavailable and organically bound forms of magnesium.

But why do we actually need magnesium in our bodies? We are all familiar with ‘calf cramps’ and know that magnesium can help with these. It can be said that magnesium acts on cramps in the body by promoting muscle relaxation, regulating calcium uptake into muscle cells and maintaining electrolyte balance. Furthermore, magnesium is involved in over 600 reactions in the body, making it a very important mineral for our bodies. In addition to the muscles, it also contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. It contributes to normal protein synthesis and plays a role in cell division.

We therefore need to provide our bodies with a form of magnesium that dissolves easily. Magnesium can, for example, be bound to citric acid (magnesium citrate) or taurine (magnesium taurate). When the magnesium salt dissolves in the body, we are not only supplied with magnesium but also with the corresponding binding partner. This leads to the following conclusions:

  • Magnesium citrate: magnesium + citric acid – highly soluble, may gently stimulate bowel function. Magnesium contributes to electrolyte balance and normal energy metabolism.
  • Magnesium malate: magnesium + malic acid – considered well tolerated, may gently stimulate bowel function. Magnesium also contributes to normal muscle function and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Magnesium ascorbate: magnesium + ascorbic acid (vitamin C) – focuses on vitamin C supply, highly soluble and gentle on the stomach.
  • Magtein® (magnesium L-threonate): Magnesium + L-threonic acid – special chemical structure, well tolerated, currently the subject of research in the field of cognitive function. Magnesium contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system and to normal psychological function. Focus on the nervous system and as a supplement during periods of mental strain.
  • Magnesium (bis)glycinate: magnesium + the amino acid L-glycine – chelated form, very stable, very well tolerated. Magnesium also contributes to normal psychological function and to the normal functioning of the nervous system. Focus on the nervous system and psychological well-being; suitable for stress and inner restlessness; often preferred in the evening.
  • Magnesium taurate: magnesium + the amino acid taurine – stable chelate structure, well tolerated. Magnesium also contributes to normal muscle function. Focus on cardiac and vascular muscles.
  • Magnesium oxide – sourced from the Dead Sea with a particularly high content of elemental magnesium (60%).
We offer these forms of magnesium as individual supplements; in addition, we have the following combination products:
  • Magnesia 7+1 – our colourful blend of 7+1 magnesium salts (magnesium citrate, magnesium bisglycinate, magnesium malate, magnesium taurate, magnesium gluconate, magnesium lactate, magnesium phosphate, magnesium carbonate).
  • Calcium & Magnesium – calcium and magnesium contribute to normal muscle function and the maintenance of normal bones
  • Magnesium Malate & Glycinate – organic magnesium compounds with rapid absorption. Magnesium also contributes to normal muscle function, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and to the normal functioning of the nervous system.

Further and more detailed information can be found in our blog article: Magnesium – a multi-talented nutrient

Summary: Magnesium must always find a binding partner and exist in the form of a salt. This binding partner, in turn, can offer benefits for the body or have effects on the target tissue. By carefully selecting the right magnesium salt, you can prioritise different areas of the body – for example, the muscles, heart, nerves, energy levels or cognitive function.

Which magnesium compound is best suited depends primarily on individual tolerability, the preferred time of intake, and the individual dietary situation.

For versatile magnesium supplementation

Those who want to combine different magnesium compounds can opt for a combination product. Magnesia 7+1 contains eight different magnesium salts, providing a broad-based magnesium supply.

Which form of magnesium is suitable for digestion?

Magnesium citrate and magnesium malate can mildly stimulate intestinal activity and soften the stool. They are therefore often preferred in cases of sluggish digestion.

Those who tend to have loose stools or diarrhea should initially use these forms with caution and can alternatively choose well-tolerated compounds such as magnesium bisglycinate or magnesium taurate.

Which form of magnesium is suitable at which time of day?

Magnesium citrate, magnesium malate, magnesium taurate, and magnesium L-threonate are often taken in the morning or during the day. Magnesium bisglycinate is often preferred in the evening due to its combination with the amino acid glycine.

Higher amounts of magnesium should ideally be divided into several smaller portions throughout the day. This can improve tolerability.

  • Organic magnesium compounds are generally highly soluble, are absorbed rapidly and are considered to be particularly well tolerated. They are particularly suitable for situations where there is an increased need for magnesium or where the digestive system is sensitive.
  • Inorganic magnesium compounds contain a high proportion of elemental magnesium and are released more slowly. They are particularly suitable for replenishing magnesium stores over the long term.

A combination of both forms may be beneficial in order to combine rapid availability with a sustained supply.

Magnesia 7+1 is a magnesium complex comprising eight different magnesium compounds. It combines organic and inorganic forms of magnesium to cater for different rates of absorption.

Thanks to this composition, the complex is suitable for a comprehensive magnesium supply that takes into account both immediate availability and long-term provision.

It contains magnesium citrate, magnesium bisglycinate, magnesium malate, magnesium taurate, magnesium gluconate, magnesium lactate, magnesium phosphate and magnesium carbonate.

Depending on the compound, magnesium can have a laxative effect.
A common cause is that magnesium citrate draws water into the bowel, which can lead to diarrhoea.

Alternatives that are better tolerated:
  • Magnesium glycinate
  • Magnesium taurate
  • Magnesium threonate

These forms are particularly suitable for people with sensitive systems.

We work with the independent laboratory AgroLab, which we commission to perform microbiological and heavy metal tests.

In our microbiological testing, we measure the aerobic mesophilic plate count (total plate count), as well as the levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli), yeasts, Salmonella, molds, and staphylococci.

For heavy metals, we test for arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury in accordance with the limit values specified in Regulation (EU) 2023/915.

The optimal time to take a supplement depends on the specific nutrient, individual tolerance, and the composition of the product. However, some ingredients can be particularly well suited to certain times of day or meals.

In the morning

Stimulating ingredients are often preferably taken in the morning or during the first half of the day. These include, for example:

  • Coenzyme Q10
  • Green tea extract
  • Certain B vitamins

Especially for sensitive individuals, it may be advisable to avoid taking stimulating ingredients immediately before bedtime.

Throughout the day

For some nutrients, it may be beneficial to divide the daily amount into several doses.

Water-soluble vitamins such as B vitamins and vitamin C can be taken throughout the day.

Magnesium can also be divided into several doses rather than taking the entire daily amount at once. This may improve tolerance, particularly with higher amounts.

In the evening

Depending on the type of magnesium compound, taking it in the evening may be beneficial. Magnesium glycinate, for example, is often preferably taken in the evening.

In general, however, the best time to take a product also depends on when it is individually best tolerated and can be reliably incorporated into your daily routine.

With a meal

Some nutrients benefit from being taken together with a meal.

Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K can be taken together and ideally with a meal containing some fat.

Omega-3 fatty acids should also be taken regularly with a meal. Omega-3 oils can be combined well with fat-soluble vitamins.

Many plant-based ingredients can also be taken as part of a meal or together with omega-3 products. However, the optimal timing depends on the specific plant compound and product formulation.

Zinc can cause nausea or stomach discomfort on an empty stomach in some people. If you have a sensitive stomach, it is therefore advisable to take zinc with a meal.

Between meals

Iron is often taken separately from meals, as various foods and beverages can affect its absorption. It is particularly advisable to leave a gap between iron and:

  • Coffee and tea
  • Caffeinated beverages
  • Milk and dairy products
  • Calcium- or mineral-rich supplements

However, if you have a sensitive stomach, iron can also be taken with a meal. In this case, individual tolerance is more important than a theoretically optimal intake situation.

Enzyme supplements vary depending on their intended use: digestive enzymes are generally taken with meals. Products that are specifically intended to be taken between meals may, for example, be taken around 30 minutes before a meal. The product's specific recommended intake should always be followed.

Around exercise

Proteins and amino acids can be taken both before and after training.

If you exercise on an empty stomach, taking them around 30 minutes before training may be beneficial. If you have already eaten a protein-rich meal, you can also plan your protein intake for after training.

In general, ensuring sufficient protein intake throughout the entire day is more important than adhering to a narrow time window around your workout.

The optimal duration of use depends on the specific nutrient, your initial situation, diet, and individual requirements.

There is therefore no one-size-fits-all recommendation for how long a product should be taken. For products intended to support nutrient intake over a longer period, use over several weeks to months may be appropriate. In many cases, a period of around three months may be suitable before nutrient status and further requirements are reassessed.

In the case of diagnosed deficiencies, medical conditions, or the use of medication, the use of supplements should be individually discussed with a doctor or qualified healthcare professional.

Our vitamin B complex, HydroVitamins, offers flexibility with 3 small capsules, which can also be opened. For vitamin B12, we offer a liquid product with a convenient 10 µg per drop for flexible dosing.

Dosage

In general, the recommended intake stated on the packaging applies to adults. Since children’s nutrient requirements vary depending on age, body weight, diet, and individual circumstances, the use and dosage of our products should be discussed with the treating pediatrician in advance. Please note that not all ingredients and products are suitable for children. Suitability should therefore always be professionally assessed on an individual basis.

Many capsules can generally be opened and their contents mixed into food or a drink, such as (coconut) yogurt, applesauce, or mashed potatoes. However, this should not be used as a basis for independently determining the dosage for children.

For drops as well, the amount and frequency of intake for children should be determined individually based on tolerance and need, in consultation with a healthcare professional.

Vitamin D may be beneficial for children. We offer different dosage forms (drops, tablets, and capsules) – see our vitamin D products.
