Gamma-linolenic acid is one of the so-called polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acids. Gamma-linolenic acid is an important fatty acid found in many plant foods. In the diet, GLA is found in appreciable amounts (except in breast milk) in only a few foods. Particularly rich in the omega-6 fatty acid are borage oil, evening primrose oil and the oil from the seed of the black currant.

From linoleic acid, which is taken in through the diet, gamma-linolenic acid is produced with the help of an enzyme (so-called delta-6-desaturase (D6D)). This is the starting material for further subsequent substances of the omega-6 line that are produced by the body e.g. components of biological membranes.

The seeds of the borage plant (Borago officinalis) provide an oil that is characterised by an unusually high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega-6 type. While borage flowers and herb contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids and are considered critical for medicinal use, the cold-pressed oil is free of these substances.

The borage oil contained in NatuGena gamma-linolenic acid provides a standardised content of 20% GLA (2g/10ml). Furthermore, a good 2g each of campesterol and 2g beta-sitosterol are included in the daily dose. Campesterol (also campesterol) and beta-sitosterol (also beta-sitosterol) are chemical compounds found in plants from the group of phytosterols, which in turn belong to the class of sterols.
