Propionic acid (also propanoic acid) is formed in our large intestine by special bacteria, the clostridia of our intestinal flora, and belongs to the group of short-chain fatty acids.
In order to form propionic acid, the intestinal bacteria need sufficient dietary fibre. From the non-digestible dietary fibre, the intestinal bacteria split off fatty acids, these are mainly the short-chain fatty acids such as acetic, buttery or propionic acid.
As propionic acid in its pure form is slightly volatile and has an unpleasant odour, our product Propionic Acid 1000 contains the associated white, odourless salt. Sodium propionate, the salt of propionic acid, is converted back to propionic acid and sodium (which is also found in table salt) in the intestine.
