Berberine is a naturally occurring plant compound from the group of alkaloids. It is especially concentrated in the roots of the barberry plant (Berberis vulgaris). Barberry is a shrub native mainly to India, Pakistan and Bhutan, and is also widely cultivated in Europe as an ornamental plant. Berberine has been valued for centuries in Indian, Chinese and European herbal traditions. Myo-inositol is a vitamin-like compound that was formerly known as “vitamin B8”, but is now classified as a so-called vitaminoid.
